National Service

Program Latihan Khidmat Negara
Kumpulan 1 Siri 6/2009
Kem Putra Sentosa, Sematan Sarawak
27 December 2008 - 11 March 2009

Fun? Nice? Okay lahhh. Nothing much I suppose.

The 3 months? Didn't make me more patriotic. Not one bit.

From what I hear and know, most people from other camps enjoyed their time in NS. That's not the case for those who were in my camp, the shittiest camp. Why? Kem Putra Sentosa was a famous for it's crazy strict rules.

Yeah.

Maybe that's why I wouldn't call it an experience of a lifetime. Moreover I was an officer there, a Platoon Leader, or a Lieutenant. It sucks being an officer. Why? For every wrong one of your privates do, they don't get punished. I do. Everyday. The more others go on breaking rules, the more the camp goes on breaking my bones. Shit. Though I got a cert because of all the torture, friggin camp won't let us officers bring back out badges/pangkats (those on my shoulders) back as memories. Shit right?

Look what they did to the Platoon Leader. He lost it. See the disgusting food? It was the best meal during camp 'cause of an occasion. Still disgusting.

Kesian right? That's what happens to officers.

The very proud 'chicken-on-fire' flag.

80% of the company

Anyhoo, was in Alpha company. Loved the company. Haha. Superiors were good except for one. Most privates were good too. Glad I got to know all of them. Guess that's one of the good things in NS - you make new friends, go through fun as well as punishments together. All for 3 months. It's different from school friends. 'Cause you only spend half a day with them. In NS, you spend 24 hours a day with them, everyday - breakfast, shower, punishment, exercise, work, sleep - all together. So you get to know one another pretty well. Very well.

Friends or Brothers At Arms?

Life in my camp is tiring, I'd say, compared to other camps I suppose. Wouldn't dare say it's definitely that way but yeah.

We'd wake up at 5am in the morning for shower and get ready. Then it's off to the padang kawad for perbarisan pagi before 6am. So damn early that the sun wasn't out and awake yet, but we're already in the field training. So that's the starting of the day then it's training all day (class, marching, exercise, water training, more training, more perbarisans, etc). All the way till night where we march back to our dorms at 11pm. Then most of us would wash clothes and do normal daily stuff to survive. Which leads us to lights out at about 1230pm. And the same thing over again the next morning.

No sleep. No sleep.

Sucks.

The regiment

Spot me

The food sucks too by the way. First few weeks there, everyone will 'lao sai'. Then you stomach gets used to it then no more. But it's still yucky. The best meal there would be the nasi lemak. We all crave for it though having it comes with a definite consequence - 'lao sai'. Haha.

Highlights of NS?

For me.. nothing more than just friends and the m-16 training we had. Not every Malaysian has a chance at firing a gun. It's only for those who are in NS and in the army. Other than that, you won't have a chance laying your hands on a gun or a live bullet.

That's Steffie shooting. She did well. Hehe.

The training wasn't easy. Targets were 100+ metres away. The blazing sun was behind the targets so we had bright sunshine shining at our eyes, making it friggin difficult to aim. Moreover, the whatever-you-call-that-aiming-thing on the gun was friggin small too. What more say that none of us get any sleep at all while living there. So yeah, it was tough. But hey, I got top 9 in camp! Praise God. Another cert packed into my bags when going home.

Through the three months, we had kawad training everyday. We even had to march to and from the dorms. Which sucks 'cause other camps don't have to march at all. Alpha company won the kawad competitions. All the categories for the event. And that broke the record in history on Kem Putra Sentosa, Sematan.

Proud.

Uniform check before marching

Nothing much to say about NS though. Just a three months of 'training' but not feeling any patriotic than before.

Malaysia Boleh?

=D
